Ventricular Subharmonics as a Bass Voice Resource in Choirs

There are different techniques that generate subharmonic vocal sounds. Vocal fry, Growling and Vocal-Ventricular Mode (VVM) are examples. Although they use different structures of the vocal system, they produce period-multiplication, vibrations with frequencies corresponding to half, one third, one fourth, and so, of the vibrations of the vocal cords. The VVM is similar to the Mongolian "Kargira" and to the Tibetan Chant from some Tantric Buddhist monasteries. This technique, described by Fuks, Sundberg and Hammarberg (1998), involves the co-oscillation of the ventricular folds and vocal folds. When producing an octave below (second-subharmonic), the ventricular folds oscillate one cycle for two cycles of the vocal folds. Male voices may typically range between deep E1 (83 Hz) and E2 with this technique. This lecture analyses and explains such voices, provides exercises towards the technique and uses a Vocal-Ventricular Bass voice in a choir with the participants.


  • Leonardo Fuks

    Leonardo Fuks combines a background in music (oboe) and acoustical engineering. He is Associate professor of Voice Science and Music Acoustics at the Rio de Janeiro Federal University School of Music and obtained his doctoral degree at the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology with prof. Johan Sundberg. His main research projects deal with alternative vocal and instrumental techniques for contemporary music. Dr Fuks creates and builds wind instruments for research, education and performance. His lectures and workshops have been presented in Japan, USA, Mexico, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Canada, Switzerland, Italy and Sweden. Dr Fuks is the founder and director of the Cyclophonica Bicycle Orchestra.
