Composer and cantor Gerald Cohen will discuss his approach to creating new music that focuses on aspects of joy, gratitude, mourning, and hope using Jewish texts. The session will explore a variety of choral music inspired by modern and ancient texts, both Hebrew and English, with an emphasis on words that bridge the expression of universal and personal emotions. Some of the pieces will be sung as a reading session by the participants, conducted by cantor Bettina Strübel, while others will be presented as video/audio recordings. Pieces include “Adonai Ro’i” (Psalm 23), “I felt my legs were praying” about interfaith involvement in the US Civil Rights movement and “Dayeinu”, an exuberant song of thanks from the Passover Seder.
